President's Message     

As I said last month.....

The international work of Rotary is awesome! Whether it be polio eradication or potable water, education, feeding, clothing or housing the less fortunate, or disaster relief, emergency shelters, wheel chairs for the disabled, or aid to make productive citizens, Rotarians are involved.

Of course without the local Rotary clubs, the international work would not be done and the service to the local communities would be missing. Just our own help at the Trenton Soup Kitchen equals 180 person hours per year and last year the club donated 144 service hours of bell ringing. Our participation and leadership in Morrisville events is a friend-building experience, as well as a way to raise funds for local and international interests.

You and I are privileged to be a part of this diversified Rotary family that consists of 1,792,957 members in 58,630 clubs.  This is world understanding month so let us consider our unique time and place on this earth and make the most of the opportunities we have to do good for mankind.

Highlights

The Morrisville Rotary punctuated its Valentines Day party with the presentation of Paul Harris Fellow awards to Rotarian Larry Schiefer and his wife Doris and to Hal Long. Two other Paul Harris Fellow awards had been presented earlier in the year to Rotarians Barbara Nuzzolo and Peter Wisnosky, who along with Schiefer and Long, are "multiple Paul Harris Fellows". (Each Paul Harris Fellow award recognizes a contribution of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation in support of its many humanitarian projects around the world, including the massive initiative to eliminate polio from the face of the earth.)  Tom Miller, the club's Foundation Chair, and President Barry Vannauker made the presentations.

Casino and Derby Night

Many thanks to Ted Fletcher for his dedicated effort and energy and to all of the club members who worked hard to make this a fun night for the community at the Elks Club on February 7.  (Go to the Photo Album for the rest of the pictures and the new careers opened to some of the members!) 

Daryl Mancinelli, District Director of the Playwiki District of the Bucks County Council Boy Scouts of America, spoke enthusiastically about the how Scouting has evolved from its founding in 1910 by Lord Baden Powell in England to today. Scouting, he said, has changed its programs to meet the needs of youth but not its purpose or principles. Today's Scouts have programs for the young boys with the Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos. For the next age group there is the Boy Scouting program where the youth can earn ranks from Tenderfoot to Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout project is designed to serve the needs of others while challenging the candidate to demonstrate his skills in planning, organizing, executing, and leading a successful project. From Scouting there is the Explorer program, open to both young men and women, where the youth can gain needed life and business knowledge and skills. The Rotary Club of Morrisville has a long standing tradition of recognizing the Scout leaders for their dedicated service to Morrisville and the surrounding communities, without which there would be no program.

The dinner speakers as usual had timely and interesting messages.

Donna Boone, the Regional Main Street Coordinator of Bucks County for the D&L National Heritage Corridor, spoke on the value of the regional economic development initiative on the four riverfront boroughs of Bristol, Morrisville, Yardley and New Hope. She is responsible for developing a regional strategy to foster economic development and community revitalization with a focus on growing downtown business and tourism through the Main Street approach. Donna is well versed in the National Trust's Main Street approach to downtown revitalization and spent four successful years as the Executive Director of Main Street Burlington (NJ) . Hundreds of communities across the country have seen tremendous growth in their communities and Donna said she foresees similar success here.

Hugo Rocco, Wachovia Investments, Morrisville Branch, (left) is being presented the club's traditional Robert Morris plate by Club President Barry Vannauker, for his talk. Hugo spoke about the current financial markets and the recession from a historical perspective. Since World War II there have been 10 recessions, seven of which were accompanied by bear markets, as is now the case. "It's anybody's guess as to when the market will bottom," he said, but went on to point out that, "The subsequent rallies/bull markets can be fierce and quite rewarding ... assuming you haven't fully bailed out of stocks during the pain of the downside."

Other Notes

A notice was received that Shelter Box # 5433, sponsored by Hal Long, had been delivered to Goma, Congo, to be deployed to the Democratic Republic of Congo Refugees. 

Remember to contact Dave Sample if you are willing to help with the Ivin's House Faith In Action program. In this program volunteers are asked on occasion to drive older people with limited transportation to doctor's appointments and grocery shopping.
